Historique ABENDANA
- La famille ABENDANA est une ancienne lignée séfarade d'origine ibérique, issue de marranes fuyant l'Inquisition espagnole au début du XVIIe siècle.
Le nom ABENDANA (variante d'Ibn Danan) fut adopté par Francisco Nuñez Pereyra, qui s'installa à Amsterdam après avoir échappé aux persécutions en Espagne.
Là, il reprit ouvertement la pratique du judaïsme, prit le nom de David ABENDANA et devint l'un des fondateurs de la première synagogue portugaise d'Amsterdam.
La famille s'implanta durablement aux Pays-Bas, particulièrement à Amsterdam, où elle contribua à l'essor de la communauté séfarade portugaise, puis s'étendit à Londres et Hambourg.
Les ABENDANA se distinguèrent par leur érudition rabbinique, leurs traductions d'ouvrages hébraïques et leurs relations avec des savants chrétiens.

Biographies
- David ABENDANA (mort en 1625) : Fondateur de la lignée à Amsterdam, ancien marrane ayant repris le judaïsme. Il fut l'un des premiers membres de la communauté portugaise naissante et cofondateur de sa synagogue.
- Manuel ABENDANA (mort le 15 juin 1667) : Fils aîné de David, ḥakham (rabbin) de la congrégation portugaise d'Amsterdam, où il œuvra à l'édification spirituelle de la communauté.
- Jacob ABENDANA (1630-1685) : Fils de Joseph ABENDANA, ḥakham renommé. Formé à l'académie rabbinique de Rotterdam, il fut ḥakham à Amsterdam dès 1655, prononça un sermon mémorable en mémoire des martyrs de Cordoue, puis devint ḥakham de la communauté séfarade de Londres en 1680. Il traduisit en espagnol le Kuzari de Juda Halévi (Amsterdam, 1663) et collabora à des commentaires bibliques, dont Lekket Shikḥah. Ses œuvres obtinrent l'approbation de savants chrétiens éminents.
- Isaac ABENDANA (vers 1640-1699) : Frère cadet de Jacob, érudit et traducteur. Il enseigna l'hébreu à Cambridge et Oxford, traduisit la Mishna en latin (manuscrit conservé à Cambridge) et publia des calendriers juifs ainsi que Discourses on the Ecclesiastical and Civil Polity of the Jews (1706), l'une des premières explications complètes du judaïsme en anglais. Il succéda brièvement à son frère comme ḥakham à Londres.

History of the ABENDANA Family
The ABENDANA family is an ancient Sephardic lineage of Iberian origin, descended from marranos who fled the Spanish Inquisition in the early 17th century.
The name ABENDANA (a variant of Ibn Danan) was adopted by Francisco Nuñez Pereyra, who settled in Amsterdam after escaping persecution in Spain.
There, he openly resumed the practice of Judaism, took the name David ABENDANA, and became one of the founders of the first Portuguese synagogue in Amsterdam.
The family established itself permanently in the Netherlands, particularly in Amsterdam, where it contributed to the growth of the Portuguese Sephardic community, and later expanded to London and Hamburg.
The ABENDANAs distinguished themselves through their rabbinical scholarship, translations of Hebrew works, and relationships with Christian scholars.

Biographies
- David ABENDANA (died 1625): Founder of the lineage in Amsterdam, a former marrano who returned to Judaism. He was one of the earliest members of the emerging Portuguese community and a co-founder of its synagogue.
- Manuel ABENDANA (died June 15, 1667): Eldest son of David, ḥakham (rabbi) of the Portuguese congregation in Amsterdam, where he worked for the spiritual development of the community.
- Jacob ABENDANA (1630–1685): Son of Joseph ABENDANA, renowned ḥakham. Trained at the rabbinical academy in Rotterdam, he became ḥakham in Amsterdam in 1655, delivered a memorable sermon in memory of the martyrs of Cordoba, and then served as ḥakham of the Sephardic community in London from 1680. He translated Judah Halevi’s Kuzari into Spanish (Amsterdam, 1663) and collaborated on biblical commentaries, including Lekket Shikḥah. His works received approval from eminent Christian scholars.
