Issus d’une ancienne famille française, les LOUVART occupent dès le XIIIe siècle de hautes fonctions dans le royaume. Philippe Le Bel récompense le premier du nom, Simon LOUVART, lors de la guerre des Flandres. Les LOUVART arrivent en Vendée vers 1740, avec François LOUVART de PONTLEVOYE, Ecuyer, employé dans la ferme du Roi au poste de Saint Philbert à la Flocellière. En 1844, Louis Victor LOUVART de PONTLEVOYE rejoint la Réunion où il devient un personnage important et riche. A cette époque, les LOUVART de PONTLEVOYE possèdent plusieurs châteaux en France, mais ils habitent au château de la Roche-Faton à Lhoumois (79), une bâtisse du XIIIe siècle, où, dit-on, Marie-Antoinette se serait réfugiée après l’arrestation de Louis XVI.
