Note historique et biographique :
Batthyány est le patronyme de l'une des plus anciennes, des plus puissantes et des plus célèbres familles de magnats hongrois, qui a fourni à la Hongrie un grand nombre de militaires et d'hommes d'État. Elle fait remonter sa généalogie à Coers, compagnon d'Árpád lors de l'invasion de la Pannonie par les Magyars en 884.
Elle est élevée à la dignité de baron de l'Empire en 1585, à celle de comte en 1630 et de prince (branche aînée) en 1764.

En 1389 Georges d'Örs (en hongrois : Örsi György), castellan (gouverneur) d'Esztergom, reçoit du roi Sigismond, en récompense de ses services éclatants, la terre de Batthyán dont toute la famille prit le nom.

Historical and biographical note:
Batthyány is the surname of one of the oldest, most powerful and most famous families of Hungarian magnates, which provided Hungary with a large number of military men and statesmen. She traces her genealogy to Coers, companion of Árpád during the invasion of Pannonia by the Magyars in 884.
She was elevated to the dignity of baron of the Empire in 1585, to that of count in 1630 and to prince (senior branch) in 1764.

In 1389 Georges of Örs (in Hungarian: Örsi György), castellan (governor) of Esztergom, received from King Sigismund, as a reward for his brilliant services, the land of Batthyán from which the whole family took the name.
